Somehow I missed hearing or seeing a message about Ash Wednesday. In any case, I wasn’t brought up to look for “fun” on that day – more a day for recognizing my mortality. The liturgical colors meant a lot to me as a mother teaching children about the rhythms of the Church year, and I vote for their continuing importance. Using such visible markers is one way of joining ourselves with the world-wide Anglican Communion and the Roman Church in sharing the Word. I have no objections to Bishop Steve’s multi-colored cope and mitre which seem appropriate to the 21st century in design & fabric, but I’m also glad to have him honor historical roots that have helped hold Christians together for many years. Language can divide us; visible symbols can acknowledge our common faith.
